Univision Ratings Gilded With Gold Cup Final

Univision Ratings Gilded With Gold Cup Final

5.4 Million Viewers Make It Network's Highest Total With Soccer Event

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 7/28/2009 11:05:34 AM EDT

Sunday's match between Mexico and the U.S. was ratings gold for Univision.

The Spanish-language broadcaster averaged 5.4 million watchers for its coverage of Mexico's 5-0 shellacking of Sam's Army in the Gold Cup final on July 26, according to Nielsen Media Research data. That was the most ever for Univision with a Gold Cup match.

The match proved particularly attractive in Los Angeles, where KMEX Univision 34 drew 1.1 million watchers, regardless of language, for the match that kicked off at noon (PT). Univision officials said that audience was 47% greater than Sunday night's combined primetime viewership of ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CW, My Network TV and Ion stations in that market.

According to Univision officials, the match, language notwithstanding, ranked first in its time period in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Sacramento among viewers 12 to 34, 18 to 34 and 18 to 49.

It also topped the Nielsen chart in its time period in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Sacramento among total viewers, men 18 to 34 and 18 to 49.

Oh, what a night!

What did you expect?

That was my comment on the four semi-finalist in the Gold Cup being the same four teams leading the table in the hexagonal for World Cup Qualifying in our region. This shouldn't be a surprise. Over time, there tends to be some consistency in performance and the fact that the finalist are the same top four tends to bring credence to that hypothesis.

The matchups of USA vs Honduras and Mexico vs Costa Rica will play tomorrow night, Thursday, at Soldiers Field in Chicago. Then it will be off to New York and the finals next Sunday.

Opening the Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington on Sunday was really exciting. A great stadium with a full house of soccer fans was a beautiful sight to behold.

On the road again... press conferences

On Tuesday and Wednesday I will be doing Press Conferences with the Managers of the Quarter Finalist teams of the Gold Cup in Philadelphia and Dallas. Philadelphia is a first time venue for the Gold Cup while in Dallas we will have the distinction of being the first sporting event to be held in the New Dallas Cowboys Stadium. See what Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has to say about the Gold Cup.

The only way to fly... take a train

When moving the teams from Boston in Group B of the Gold Cup to their venue in Philadelphia for the Quarter Finals, the best plane turned out to be a train. Here is some video taken by the USA on their way to Philly.
