Cinco de Mayo...

It is 5am on the 5th day of the 5th month and the sun has yet to show its face over the horizon. So, from this early posting time, let me wish everyone a Happy Cinco de Mayo.

When my office confirmed Puebla, Mexico as the venue for the upcoming Women's U20 CONCACAF Championship and World Cup Qualifying tournament, I doubt that it realized that on this day in 1862, the Battle of Puebla was fought against the French by Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza SeguĂn. This became the basis of the annual celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

The next Battle of Puebla will be fought next month between June 17-28, and all by women. The Women's U20 is expected to be one of the hardest fought battles between the countries of our region in years in this extremely competitive group. The draw will be held for this competition tomorrow in my office.
